Or, alternatively, does anyone know the gsm of that particular banknote? Basically I would like to know how much money could legitimately be transferred in a carrier bag.

Open Question: A 9 months old going to London? Please answer!?

Tuesday, June 23rd, 2009
Hey all, This is our first time going away for a vacation with our baby, she is going to be 9 months when we do. Anyway, I am worried about a couple of things. The most important one is (BABY SITTING) As I am thinking to go out for one night with my husband somewhere elegant like a theater, and I am sure I can't take her. Should I trust the services offered by the hotel? Should I look for someone outside the hotel? I am afraid!!!!!! Secondly, I don't think it's convenient to carry with me a whole bag filled with baby food and diapers :P Is it so expensive there? And Finally, should I take a mini stroller with me? or are those things not convenient and would break off? what if she slept? Should I use a carrier as well? Am I going to have fun with an infant in London? :-s

Resolved Question: Pet Carrier Airline Questions… HELP!?

Sunday, June 21st, 2009
Well, I really wanted my 6 month old Schnauzer puppy to go with me when I fly to my childhood home in a couple of weeks, but perhaps now it may not be possible! This puppy is very small... but she is also very TALL, (hadn't realized how much she'd grown when I originally bought the carrier..) her legs are almost as long as her body! She's only 10lbs. Anyway, the soft-sided bag I got her was 10.5" high, and she appears to be too tall for it, (perhaps it was also because of the bed in the bottom adding height?) So I returned it and kept searching. I called the airline's reservation department and they said their restrictions for kennels were 23"LX 9"HX 13"W. Anyway, I asked if that was for the hard plastic or soft sided, and she didn't seem to know, but that was what was listed on their site. She is just a little -TOO- tall. If she lays down the entire time she will be fine, but I know the website also says they must be able to stand up and turn around. Has anyone flown with a pet to know how picky they are about that??? I found a Sherpa brand carrier that says "DELTA" on it, which is 11" which is still just a smidgen tighter for her head than I'd like it when standing up, but she fits just fine, but it says on the tag "Airline Approved, The airlines quoted dimensions are for Plastic Kennels" Is this really true?? In addition, I found this carrier called the Sturdibag: http://www.sturdiproducts.com/4111/xcart/product.php?productid=124&cat=10&page=1 which would be absolutely perfect dimension wise, but says that it is 12" High. It also says, though "Weight: 2 lbs 10 ounces (1,2KG) Weight includes washable fleece pad and 4-point shoulder strap 18”L x 12”W x 12” Height Flex™ (designed to flex down without collapsing to conform to all under seat Heights)" Even their extra large says this and that one is 16"H. Has anyone had experience with these bags? Oh, and I am flying American Airlines.. anyone know how strict they are? Is this really true? Has anyone used one of thses before?? How much can soft sided carriers collapse?? Would 3 inched be appropriate?? HELP I need to know if I need to cancel her reservation or not. I am NOT willing to check her as cargo, it is carry on or not at all..

Resolved Question: Is this story any good?

Friday, June 19th, 2009
This is just the first little bit of a story I wrote. I want your honest opinion. Thanks! ~~~~~~ I grabbed my bag off the luggage carrier. This was my first cruise! I had turned 15 on Thursday, and this was my present. I was super excited. We had never really had enough money to do this kind of stuff before. We weren’t poor, but we weren’t rich, either. We were on the upper end of the middle class. But my dad said we were “on our way to rich.” My mom, a lawyer, had recently closed a case in which she made a lot of money. A few months before that, my dad had struck it big when the stock prices rose. I pulled up the handle on my luggage bag and began rolling it down the hallway. “221...” I muttered to myself, looking for our room. My parents were being slow getting their luggage, and I just simply couldn’t wait any longer. When I came upon room 221, I put the card key in the reader and the door clicked. I turned the handle and opened the door. The room was beautiful! Tight, but beautiful. There was a small closet in the foyer. Past that, there was a queen size bed pushed up against the wall. At the foot of the bed and to the left, there was a television in the corner. At the head of the bed, there was a large mirror. Underneath the bed were drawers. To the left of the bed was a small vanity with another mirror. In the next room over was a pale green sofa. Next the sofa were large glass double doors that peeked out onto the balcony. Across the room from the sofa was a door that led to the bathroom. I guessed that my parents would be getting the bed and I would wind up on the sofa. I walked over to the sofa and plopped my bag down. I opened the curtains to the glass door to let some light in. It was beautiful! I walked out onto he balcony. There was a large blue pool on the deck, which I could see from my room. Surrounding the pool were many chairs, tables, and umbrellas. I breathed in a breath of the salty sea breeze. A light breeze blew my hair back from my face. I heard my parents finally come in the room. I walked back inside. “Isn’t it just beautiful!” I exclaimed. “It’s cramped!” My mother sighed. I frowned. “I like it…” “Well, it’s your birthday present, dear, so as long as you like it, everything’s fine.” My father smiled as he gave me a big hug and kissed my forehead. I smiled and hugged him back. “Thank you!” My parents put their bags on the bed. “So who’s sleeping where?” My dad asked. “You mean I get to pick?” I gasped, mock sarcasm laid thickly in my tone. My father laughed. “No, but I thought I’d let you try anyway.” I stuck my tongue out at him playfully. I went back over to what was now my room and grabbed my bag. I took it over to the small armoire and began putting my clothes in it and my shoes underneath it. After everything was put away, I decided to go for a swim. I grabbed my bathing suit and went into the bathroom to change. I was wearing a purple plaid halter top bikini. I put my green shorts and a t-shirt for the walk down to the pool. I was about to sneak out when my dad caught me. “Sunscreen!” He reminded me and tossed me a bottle. I hated that stuff. It made your skin all shiny and icky. I knew he wasn’t going to let me leave until I put it on, so I went out onto the balcony and sprayed it on. I went back inside and tossed the bottle of sunscreen on the bed and darted out the door with my towel. I took the elevator downstairs. The lobby was really beautiful. There were spiraling staircases going all the way to the top of the ship. There were several fancy chandeliers hanging from the ceiling. I wasn’t sure which way to go for the pool. I went over to the desk where we had checked in at. No one was at the desk. “Excuse me!” I said politely. “What?” An apparently grumpy old lady came out from the room behind the desk. “Where’s the pool?” “Right out that door and to the left.” She pointed towards a door to the left of me. “Thank you!” I said, walking towards the door. “Mhmm.” The lady said, turning back to the room she had come from. “God she was grumpy.” I muttered. The pool was approximately 9 feet deep in the deepest part. There were about one hundred people crowded in and around the pool. I took off my shirt and shorts. I laid down on one of the white reclining chairs, trying to get a tan. I was Irish, so I was extremely pale. It was really hard for me to get a tan, because it takes a few days for me to get dark, because I burn so easily. I could feel the sun burning my skin even though I was wearing sunscreen. My stomach was starting to hurt because I was so hungry. I sighed. I had only been out here for like fifteen minutes. I stood up and grabbed my towel and clothes. I quickly spun around to go inside. I ran into a lifeguard. “Sorry!” I exclaimed, looking up at him. “No problem.” He said. He smiled at me and flipped his brown hair out of his green eyes. I pulled my e ooh, sorry ! it cut off some of it :( ~~~~~~~~ “Sorry!” I exclaimed, looking up at him. “No problem.” He said. He smiled at me and flipped his brown hair out of his green eyes. I pulled my eyes away from him. I walked away quickly. After a few feet, I glanced back. He was watching me, but quickly turned away after I saw him. I walked faster, certain that he was still watching me. I hopped in the elevator and rode it up to my floor. I walked in my room. My mom had a nice dress on, and my father had a fancy tie on. “Where are you two going?” I asked. “Dinner!” My dad said, ecstatic. “Perfect!” I replied. I quickly changed into my white halter top dress, then went into the bathroom and let my hair down. I put on a bit of makeup, as this was apparently a formal dinner, then went back into the other room. “Ready?” my mother asked. I smiled. “Yep!” When we got to the dining hall, we were led to a table near a large window which overlooked the water. The view was stunning. The sun was just starting to set over the water, and there were dolphins jumping playfully out of the water. I was so entranced by the view that I was startled when our waiter arrived. “Good evening, I’m Wesley. How are you all?” He asked. He was gorgeous. He had light blond hair that came down to his eyebrows. He had the most beautiful blue eyes. He looked to be just a few inches taller than me, and maybe a year older. “Good.” My parents replied in unison. I didn’t say anything. “Amber, how was you evening?” My mother prompted. I stuttered, trying to get the words out. “I-It.. It was good.” ‘Oh, God,’ I thought ‘I sounded like an idiot!’ Wesley smiled at me. I blushed and pretended to look at the menu. “What would you all like to drink?” Wesley asked politely. Both of my parents ordered some kind of drink whose name I didn’t catch; I just assumed it was an alcoholic beverage. I just got a water. Wesley smiled and left to go get out drinks. I looked out the window again. Just in the five minutes I had looked away, it had already gotten a bit darker outside. The sky was a million different shades of red, bordered by purple clouds. A few moments later I looked over to see Wesley exiting the kitchen with our drinks. He made his way over to our table. He handed my mom and dad their drinks, then got my water off the tray he was carrying and leaned over to hand it to me. Something happened; maybe he tripped, maybe his shirt got caught on something, but the glass tipped and water spilled all over me. ~~~~~~~~~~ that's all im going to post here for now. sorry about the messy formatting, some if it got lost when i copied it over ):

The Guardian Crowdsources the MPs Expense Investigation: Giving Idle Hands Direction

Thursday, June 18th, 2009

I’m fascinated by today’s effort by The Guardian to crowdsource investigation of the MPs expenses.

My interest isn’t in the topic investigated, really. While I agree that MPs need to be brought down from that Lala land where they can expense duck houses for our hard earned tax money to pay, I do feel that it has somewhat turned into a witch hunt. The time and energy spent by auditors and journalists to establish who should be burnt at the stake first could have been used in much better ways.

mp_expenses_guardian_smallSo The Guardian came up with a solution; use those idle hours we spent faffing around on the web when we should be working and crowdsource the investigation. Built by Simon Willison and a few others, it is a giant repository of the scanned expenses documents for us to browse.

The process is simple:

  1. Visit the “Investigate your MP’s expenses” site
  2. Hit “Start Reviewing” to see the first expense document (Bonus, they provide a progress bar telling us how many pages we’ve looked at)
  3. Decide what kind of document it is and whether it’s interesting
  4. Make observations to help the journalists investigate the right entries

So how did The Guardian manage to make it such that we have collectively crunched through 20,000 pages in the past four hours, when we procrastinate for weeks before doing our own 12 receipts worth of expenses at work? By rewarding us and feeding our voyeuristic streak.

Rewarding us

The rewards are simple; we get satisfaction in knowing we’re taking part in “justice” being made. So far, I’ve marked two items as “Investigate this!” and I feel like a mini Sherlock Holmes.

In addition to this, the use of a big fat progress bar makes us feel the power of the crowd by showing us how quickly it’s progressing. At one point, I refreshed every 60 seconds to see over 100 documents knocked off every minute. For a generation used to racing games’ lap times and Flight Control high scores, it’s just another little buzz.

Feeding our voyeuristic streak

Admit it, you’ve always wondered what these people spend their allowances. Being able to snoop around feeds that urge. Well… somewhat does. There’s enough black tape redacting out claim details to hold together the hockey sticks of an entire team for a couple of seasons, but we can make out enough to shake a finger and tut at our MPs.

How crowdsourcing could (and should) be used

This kind of manual work that cannot be handled by a computer is already widespread on the web.

Spammers use a clever tactic through which they republish a captcha they want to solve from any given site to a porn site, let an “innocent” porn site visitor solve the captcha by telling them they must fill it in to access the site. Use the solution to access the first site. The poor porn site visitor has not only killed kittens, but also helped a spammer fulfill its dirty deed.

Amazon’s Mechanical Turk is also using the power of crowds by enabling companies to outsource manual tasks to workers at a lesser cost than hiring staff to do colour comparisons or other tasks computers struggle with.

However, the potential for this type of crowdsourcing is amazing. Thousands of people, passionate to get something done, can achieve seemingly impossible tasks when shown a way to direct their efforts.

It makes me wonder how we can unleash our own communities’ potential; beta testing, idea shaping and customer cross-support… The possibilities stretch forever.
